Freezer Beef

There’s no supply chain disruption when your home freezer is stocked with freezer beef. It will be available whenever you’re hungry for a great steak or burger.

We have a small scale cow-calf operation and raise our own black angus beef from birth. Calves start on their mother’s milk, then graze on pasture as they grow. We finish them on grain and hay (from our farm). This helps enhance the taste of the meat by providing extra marbling. Our freezer beef never receives antibiotics or growth hormones.

We sell beef by the 1/4, 1/2 or whole, and are currently accepting reservations for 2025. Iowa State University Extension provides a helpful reference, the Beef and Pork Whole Animal Buying Guide, regarding buying beef directly from a farmer. Be sure to select the FREE PDF option.

How much freezer space will you need for your beef? “In terms of how much freezer space will be needed, the general rule is one cubic foot per 35-40 pounds of packaged meat” (Michigan State University).

How to Get on Our Reservation List:

The price for 2025 will be set in Spring 2025. In 2024, it was $3.25/pound of hanging weight. Hanging weight is the weight of the beef without its hide or internal organs. After the price is set, customers are given a chart of estimated costs of the beef to help with the decision of whether they want to continue or cancel their reservation.

Customers purchasing a whole or half will have their choice of dates based on first to call, first booked. Those purchasing a quarter will be paired with another customer purchasing a quarter so both receive meat cuts from the front and hind sections.

We plan to use the following processors in 2025: Lacy’s Meats, near Dresden; Olde Village Meats, in Frazeysburg; and Lazy Acre Meats, near New Lexington.

The customer is reminded that their beef will be going to the processor approximately one week before it is transported. After we get the beef’s hanging weight, customers are emailed an invoice and given a chart of beef cuts and preparation methods. The customer phones the processor with their cutting and packaging instructions after they receive the invoice for the beef.

Full payment for the beef is due to Shriner Family Farms LLC before the beef is released from the processor. The processor phones the customer when the beef is ready to take home. The customer pays the processor when they pick up their beef.
